Once upon a time when I was 18 I moved to Europe with some friends. For awhile, four of us girls shared an apartment. It was a very exciting time in my life and I was looking forward to really soaking in the culture and getting to know this brand new city.

Shortly after we arrived and settled in, we were told that for two weeks in the summer and two weeks in the winter our hot water would be shut off. That either meant two weeks of sponge baths or two weeks of very, very cold showers. (Or two weeks of nothing.) In the summer, it was bearable. But in the winter, we just couldn’t take it. So what did we do? We boiled water for each other’s baths. It was a team effort of boiling pot after pot of water and filling the tub just enough to get clean.

Why did I tell you that fascinating story? 😉 Because it was in Europe that I learned to truly, 100% appreciate the art of a good bath. Because when we did have hot water, I enjoyed those baths tremendously.

Body Wash or Beauty Bar

A long bath is all about some indulgence, so using a body wash or beauty bar that gives me that indulgent smell and feeling is perfect. A Candle

Taking a long hot bath is all about relaxation and a candle provides just the glow I need to truly relax. My daughter and I created a bath basket that we store in the linen closet. We always keep a couple of different candles and matches in it that are used just for the bath. While the tub is filling with water, I light the candle and create the perfect setting.

Bath Salts

Although I love a good bubble bath for the look of it, I have found I prefer bath salts. In our bath basket we keep a selection of salts ranging in ones infused with lavender to salts that help with muscle soreness. As the bath is filling, I add one to two cups of salts, letting it dissolve completely before I get in.

A Bath Pillow

A great bath pillow can do wonders for your bath experience. My husband bought me one a few years ago, which was a step up from the cheaper ones I used to buy. It gave me good neck support, the suctions actually stayed attached to the tub and it lasted for years. Make sure to not neglect your bath pillow by leaving it in the shower. It needs to be cleaned and dried regularly so it doesn’t start to mildew. The better you take care of it, the longer it will last.

A Book or Tablet

For years I tried to read in the tub. I had a friend (in Europe) who would bathe for an hour or two and read. She would take these enormous novels in the bath with her and I would always ask ‘aren’t you afraid of dropping it in the water?’ or ‘how do you hold up the book for so long?’. I’m still not sure what her secret was, but I do know they have handy dandy bath caddies that can hold your book and your favorite drink.

I gave up on reading in the bath for a number of reasons and now use this time to watch an episode of whatever I’m currently binging on. I set up a stool right next to the tub, place my tablet on it and start the episode before I get in the tub. It is pure relaxation and indulgence!
