A couple of weeks ago, I took my youngest son Aaron to our local Pearle Vision located in Wolfe Ranch Town Center to get an extensive eye exam and a new pair of glasses. I wanted to make sure he was set up for success as he enters a new year of school. He knows all too well what it’s like to sit in a classroom and not be able to see well. It’s distracting and can affect one’s performance.
I was pretty shocked when I recently learned that 90% of children under the age of 6 who should be wearing prescription glasses are not. While 40% of teenagers need vision correction – and several of them go untreated. Having something like your vision corrected can make such a difference in a young person’s academics.
Dr. Mark Sturm and the team at Pearle Vision took great care of Aaron while we were there. They answered any questions he had about the test they were performing, as well as informed me of how the health of his eyes were. One test they did gave us an in depth look at Aaron’s eyes and it was incredibly fascinating. The Doctor was explaining things they’re able to detect through these tests, such as glaucoma. This was the most thorough eye test any of my kids has ever had and I was so pleased with everything, from the time we walked in the door till the time we left.
Both my oldest son and I plan on making an appointment soon. We’re both noticing we have to strain a bit to see and given the fact he’s a new driver, having his eyes checked is extremely important.
When Aaron was done with the eye exam, it was time to choose the perfect pair of glasses. If you know him, you know he takes his time when it comes to things like choosing something he’s going to wear every single day. (Don’t even get me started on what shopping for shoes is like.) They were so kind and let him take his time, answering any questions we had.
After trying on a bunch of glasses and some serious thought, Aaron ended up choosing a pair of Ray-Ban Clubmasters. A few days later we received the call that they were ready and he was so excited to pick up his new pair of glasses.
Everyone who has seen him in them says he has a Clark Kent thing going on. I’d have to agree.
As a parent, I can feel good about the fact that Aaron had a thorough eye exam and is heading back to school with corrected vision. Children should get eye exams once every year before they go back to school as good vision helps with school academics. Plus a pair of glasses he feels really good in.

We do eye checks every August to get ready for back to school.
I think that it is a great idea to do an eye check BEFORE school starts so that kids don’t have problems seeing during school. My family gets eye exams every 1-2 years.

I have check ups about once a year and so far, so good. I don’t feel the need to have eyes checked just because school is starting. There doesn’t seem to be any signs that something is wrong.

My kids and my 87 year old Dad get annual eye exams, and then we all have lunch together. So far the kids don’t need glasses, but since Dad is wearing trifocals now, I will be having them checked on a regular basis.
