How to Have the Best At-Home Hair Color Experience

A trip to the salon for a fresh hair coloring can be nice. But when you just want to touch up your roots, or just barely change your hair color, a salon can be time-consuming and expensive. Although boxed hair color from the store doesn’t have the best rap, there are several ways you can ensure a gorgeous color. Here are a few ways to get the most out of your at-home hair color.

Beginning

Start with clips, a brush or comb, a towel you don’t use anymore, and a timer (You can just use your phone for this.)

Hair clips for at home hair color

The clips are for sectioning off your hair, the towel is to drape over your shoulders so dye doesn’t get on your neck or the shirt you’re wearing, and the brush is to brush your hair out before the dyeing begins so you don’t have a tangled mess on your hands while trying to dye your hair.

If you really are worried about dye getting on your skin, apply a little bit of conditioner or Vaseline to your ears. Wiping off the dye becomes a lot easier.

Also, be sure to choose a shade that’s within two shades of your current hair color. This applies to lighter or darker color.

Also, choosing one of the best hair color products is important as well. Here’s a list of some of the top-rated:

If your roots are the darkest part of your hair, definitely be sure to apply the dye on your head, and then go towards the ends. That way, the dye is sitting on the darkest parts of your hair for a longer amount of time and the color on the roots and the ends will look the same.

Section

Do not just go at it when you’re dying your hair and apply the dye on your whole head at once. Be sure to section off parts of your hair with hair clips so you know which sections you’ve already applied dye to.

This will ensure that you’ve applied dye to all of your hair and not just a few sections.

The best way to section off your hair is to separate it into fourths: the front left, the front right, the back left, and the back right.

Have Someone Else Do The Back (Or Just Use A Mirror)

The absolute most intimidating part about dyeing your own hair is the back. Since you can’t see, there is no way for you to know if you’re actually getting dye on all of your head. That can end in two completely different colors of hair, and possibly tears and frustration.

To avoid this issue, either invite one of your girlfriends over and have them dye the back of your head, or sit in front of a mirror with a smaller mirror in one hand and the dye in the other. Saturate your head as best you can, and use the small mirror to check on the status of your hair every couple of minutes.

Maintaining Hair Color

The type of shampoo you use will greatly determine how long the dye lasts. Shampoos and conditioners without parabens or dyes generally work best. The fewer chemicals, the better.

Most importantly, avoid shampoos and conditioners that contain sulfate. Sulfate will strip your hair of color, essential oils, and could potentially damage your scalp if you have sensitive skin. Go for natural extracts and antioxidants that will boost shine and not strip your hair of your fresh and beautiful hair color.
